Alex & Lola go talent scouting!

Our very own Lola Wilson & Alex Peters have been talking to students from Leeds Metropolitan University about working in the digital industry and SEO this week.

Third year Journalism, PR and Marketing students were invited to the event held at Broadcasting Place to talk to companies from all over Leeds about potential careers in the digital industry.

The format was a ‘speed dating’ event where students would have 10 minutes with each company representative to ask them whatever they wanted and maybe even try and blag some work experience!

Alex Peters, our SEO Consultant, said ‘I think this was a great opportunity for Leeds Met students to find out about real world jobs and what it’s like once you actually graduate. The hot topic of the day was SEO – a lot of the students were covering this a little bit on their course but our advice was to get up to speed on how SEO works really quickly. We think someone who reads up and knows about SEO would have a lot to offer a prospective employer.

‘The Journalism students had a lot to ask Lola about copywriting too. I think the best tip she had to offer them about writing for online was ‘write like you’re writing for your Mum!’ and reminding them that even if you’re writing content for digital, you have to remember that it should be natural and appeal to actual human beings first. She encouraged them to keep their own blog or website and submit their work for free to other websites because having a live portfolio is what will set you apart when applying for jobs post graduation.’

Jenny Kean, Senior Lecturer for Journalism and organiser of the event, said: ‘Our students are abuzz and I think they have been extremely lucky to have had this access to you all on such a direct basis, so I must thank you for giving up your time in this way. We can’t do it without people like you.’

If you think you’ve got what it takes to complete an internship or work experience with us, get in touch and tell us why!
